What is Mindful Parenting?

To understand what mindful parenting is, you first need to understand about mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in the moment; being aware of who you are, what you’re doing and how is it impacting your life and those around you. It is also about developing a more balanced, non-judgmental sense of the world and society.

Mindfulness Parenting inculcates the idea of mindfulness in parenting. The goal of the parents here is to respond, not react to their child i.e., responding to the child’s needs and thoughts  and not channelizing their energy on just reacting. This way the bond between the parent and the baby grows stronger and innately a mutual understanding is developed between the both.

How to start practicing mindful parenting?

Mindful parenting does not mean that you have to always be positive or you have to agree to every demand of your child’s.  The following steps will bring a deeper understanding on how to start practicing mindful parenting, easily.

  1. Start with yourself.

In order to become a mindful parent you have to first be a mindful human. Pay close attention to how you feel- inside and out, why are you feeling the way you feel and if you’re feeling not your best is there anything you can do to make yourself feel better.

  1. Press Pause

If you as a parent are able to press pause on your anger during the heat of the moment, consider it a battle won. It is a challenging task to do but not entirely impossible. One way to go about it is focusing on your breath. When you do this your attention diverts on the feeling and the sensations of the body and not on the trigger that is fueling it. This, however, takes practice.

  1. Listen to your child’s perspective

The number one thing to always remember is that they are a child. The way they act, their temperament, their actions are going to be that of a child. You, as a parent will always have to act as a bigger person with them because you can regulate your emotions while the child is still learning how to do that. Listening to their perspective will help you understand why they do what they do. It’ll also help you work out a better solution.

Parting Words

You will make mistakes. You might also lose your temper and you might also fail at these tasks a couple of times. But, don’t beat yourself for it. Just keep trying!
