What is Sleep Regression?
Sleep regression is a period of time, usually about two to four weeks when a baby who’s sleeping well suddenly has trouble settling down for sleep or wakes up fussing in the middle of the night.
During a regression, most babies will go from sleeping soundly to experiencing frequent night waking, being harder to calm or settle before sleep, waking up early from naps, or fighting nap times altogether.
Signs of Sleep Regression
The signs of sleep regression can vary based on the cause of your baby’s sleep problems. Here are some signs your baby may be going through a sleep regression:
- More frequent night waking
- Trouble falling asleep at bedtime
- Increased fussiness or crankiness
- Sudden resistance to naps
How to Deal With Sleep Regression?
- Keep a calming routine and environment.
Try adding a soothing massage, bath, or storytime to your bedtime routine to keep your baby relaxed. Also, make sure their environment is soothing – the room should be dark and at a comfortable temperature. Maybe even try adding a white or brown noise machine to help calm them and help them fall asleep.
- Adjust your own routine
As a parent, adjusting your own daily routine to fit in with your baby’s nap and sleep schedule is more feasible and more in your control. Meal times and play times should also happen on a consistent schedule. Factor in your baby’s schedule when you plan your day.
- Pay attention to sleep cues
Yawning, rubbing their eyes, fussing, and disinterest are all classic signs of a sleepy baby. When you notice them, try and get your baby to a quiet space to rest.
Your response time to these signs can mean the difference between getting them to sleep and trying to console an overtired baby who is resisting sleep.
- Take help from family and friends
As much as your baby needs sleep, you as a parent do, too. Don’t be afraid to turn to your loved ones to watch and play with your little one while you take some time to sleep and recharge yourself.
