What is Feeding Disorder?
A feeding disorder, in infancy or early childhood, is a child’s refusal to eat certain food groups, textures, solids, or liquids for a period of at least one month, which causes the child to not gain enough weight, grow naturally or cause any developmental delays.
Why is it a Concern?
Difficulty swallowing can cause a child to aspirate food or drink into the lungs, which can cause pneumonia or other serious lung conditions. These children usually have trouble eating enough, leading to inadequate nutrition and failure to gain weight or grow properly.
Eating is not only critical for survival, but it’s also an integral part of our social experience. A child who can’t eat or won’t eat can have a serious impact on the entire family’s quality of life.
Symptoms of Feeding Disorder
Children attempting to swallow different food textures often vomit, gag, or choke while eating. At feeding times they may react negatively to attempts to feed them, and refuse to eat. Other symptoms include head turns, crying, difficulty in chewing or vomiting, and spitting whilst eating. Many children may have feeding difficulties and may be picky eaters, but most of them still have a fairly healthy diet. Children with a feeding disorder, however, will completely abandon some of the food groups, textures, or liquids that are necessary for human growth and development. Children may be eating non-food items or may be dependent on tubes.
Diagnosis
Feeding disorders are usually treated for all medical concerns first to make sure the child is safe and comfortable for eating. Nutrition assists with making appropriate food choices for growth and development, OT and speech address skill development, and psychology assists with mealtime structure and compliance. We often work together via outpatient therapy to provide a comprehensive treatment plan for each child as is appropriate.
